Asbestos / Asbestosis Compensation Claim
Johnson Law - Asbestosis & Asbestos-related Illnessness
Even though asbestos has been banned in the UK for decades, thousands upon thousands of us have spent long periods of time working in buildings and industrial spaces without sufficient protection. These days there are hundreds of new cases of Asbestosis - the lung condition that can occur after prolonged exposure - every year.
What is Asbestosis?
Asbestosis is a lung disease caused by breathing in asbestos fibres. The fibres will irritate the lungs causing thickening and scarring to the lung tissues which in turn is known as fibrosis. If you have Fibrosis it can make the lungs lose elasticity which in turn will cause them to not function properly.
Asbestos is actually the mineral which was more commonly used in the UK from the end of the Second World War in 1945 until 1999 when it was banned. It was also used as lagging for pipes and boilers, as insulation for walls and ceilings and also in brake pads and clutches for motor vehicles, to name but a few examples.
Having asbestosis puts the sufferer at a much greater risk of developing lung cancer as well as respiratory problems.
Symptoms, Diagnosis and Treatment of Asbestosis include:
- Shortness of breath
- Chest pain
- nexplained cough
- Tightness feeling across chest
Your GP will probably listen to your chest with a stethoscope, carry out lung function tests or refer you to have scans or x-rays carried out. You may also need to have a biopsy carried out to examine some of the tissue from your lungs more closely.
If you are diagnosed as having asbestosis, it cannot be reversed or cured. If you are a smoker, you should stop smoking immediately as the combined effect of asbestos exposure together with smoking is known to greatly increase the risk of developing lung cancer.
Other Asbestos Related Illnesses
Asbestosis is, in fact, only one of the diseases which is caused by exposure to asbestos. Other asbestos related diseases and conditions include:
- Lung Cancer
- Pleural Thickening
- Pleural Plaques
If you have developed asbestosis or any other asbestos related disease during the course of your working life, you may be able to make a claim for asbestosis compensation with our experienced Disease Team at Johnson Law Solicitors.
Asbestos related diseases cause more than 5,000 deaths every year. However the number of people affected by mesothelioma is still increasing because of the time it can take for this illness to develop. It is expected to peak around 2015. Asbestos related diseases can take on average 30 years or more to develop after the initial exposure to asbestos. If you were exposed to asbestos between the 1950's and 1980's then now would be around the time you would be diagnosed by your GP or Consultant with having asbestosis.
Unlike some of the other asbestos related diseases such as mesothelioma which can be caused by large or small amounts of asbestos, asbestosis normally only affects people who have been exposed to a lot of asbestos over a long period of time. For example people working as plumbers, laggers or demolition workers where they were exposed to asbestos for a number of years would be at risk of developing asbestosis.
