What is Vibration White Finger (VWF)?

Vibration White Finger (VWF) is a repetitive stress injury (RSI) where the small blood vessels in the fingers periodically spasm causing them to go bluish-white, cold and feel very painful.  This can last from several minutes to several hours.  Soon after, the available oxygen in the blood is used up and the fingers turn blue. Once the spasms subside the fingers turn red as oxygenated blood returns to the finger tips.

Vibration White Finger is sometimes known as Raynaud's Syndrome or Phenomenon. These spams can be caused by many different things. When spasms occur due to physiological issues or drugs it is known as Raynaud's Syndrome. When it is caused by trauma it is known as Raynaud's Phenomenon.

Vibration White Finger is also the vascular component of Hand-Arm Vibration Syndrome (HAVS), which covers a broader repetitive stress injury diagnosis.

Symptoms of Vibration White Finger:

  • Fingers turning white, then blue, then red are characteristic of Vibration White Finger (full colour range doesn’t need to be reached to have VWF)
  • Spasms are brought on by exposure or contact to cold
  • Pain, tingling, and numbness usually during the spasms
  • Unpleasant throbbing or tingling sensation and swelling and pain to fingers when blood or feeling returns
Use of vibrating equipment and power tools is the primary cause of Vibration White Finger. Workers who use pneumatic drills, jack hammers, sanders, concrete vibrators, chainsaws, compactors and lawn mowers are at most risk of developing VWF, HAVS or Raynauds Syndrome.

Symptoms are usually completely reversible but in severe cases there is permanent damage and ulceration of the tissues. If symptoms don’t reverse and the extremity becomes ulcerated or gangrenous, urgent review and treatment in hospital is needed.

Can I make a claim for Vibration White Finger (VWF)?

Yes you can if you have been diagnosed with Vibration White Finger (VWF) by your doctor and he or she has noted in your medical records it is due to either cold conditions at your workplace or mechanical stress (such as using vibrating tools such as a drill) at work.

Your employers have a duty of care to protect you during your working day and must ensure that you are provided with adequate clothing if you are exposed to the cold as part of your job or to provide you with the correct tools, adequate breaks and training if you use vibratory tools or equipment throughout your working day.  If your employers have failed to do this and you are suffering from Raynauds Syndrome, Hand Arm Vibration Syndrome (HAVS) or Vibration White Finger (VWF) then you may be entitled to make a compensation claim against your employers Insurers.
