Arm and Hand Bursitis Compensation Claim (Tennis Elbow or Beat Elbow)

NHS Video: Bursitis

Bursitis is is a painful joint illness often found in the knees, hand, shoulder and elbows. It has many informal names, depending on the affected area of the body. When bursitis affects the hands, arms and shoulders, it is often called beat elbow, bricklayers shoulder, miners elbow, or tennis elbow. Of course, you don't need to play tennis to get tennis elbow, it's a condition that can occur from a number of activities, including at your place of work.

When busitis affects the legs, hips or feet, it is known as trochanteric bursitis, hip bursitis, housemaid's knee, clergyman's knee, or policeman's heel.

Bursitis of the arm or hand is often due to occupations or activities that involve strenuous and frequent use of the arm muscles, especially near the joints.

Occupations can include:

  • Cleaners
  • Bricklayers
  • Mechanics
  • IT workers
  • Labourers, especially where lifting is involved
  • Housekeepers
  • Miners
  • Caretakers
Arm and hand joints contain liquid-filled sacs (called bursas) that are designed to help movement by protecting them muscles from the bones. Some activities can cause these bursas to become inflamed and swell, which is the painful condition known as Bursitis

Your employer should recognise the risks of your job, with regards to strenunous and repeated use of the arms and hands, that can lead to injuries like arm and hand bursitis. They should also provide adequate training and protective clothing to minimise these effects and keep you safe in your job.  If you feel your employers have not protected you in this way and you are suffering from bursitis, then you may have a claim for compensation.

You can claim for compensation even if you do not work for that employer any more, and it is possible to claim even if that employer is no longer in business.
